In Ukraine, the area under winter crops is decreasing: how much wheat, barley, rye and rapeseed will be sown

Sowing of winter crops is underway in Ukraine. For the 2026 harvest, 5.42 million hectares will be sown, which is 4% less than last season.

Such forecast data was provided for the EP by the Seed Association of Ukraine.

According to the forecast, wheat will be sown on 4.78 million hectares (as of September 22, 14.1% of the forecasted area has already been sown), barley – 576 thousand hectares (6.5%), rye – 69.3 thousand hectares (25.5%), rapeseed – 1.11 million hectares (78.3%).

It is reported that the highest indicators of fulfillment of winter crop sowing forecasts as of September 22 are in Donetsk, Poltava, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions.

” If we analyze and compare the areas sown with winter crops (fact 2024 and forecast 2025), they have decreased by 4% overall. Winter wheat – a decrease in areas of 4.4% is recorded, barley – by 2.7%, rapeseed – by 5.6%, but rye – an increase of 7.6%,” noted the executive director of the association, Suzana Hryhorenko.
